Rescued, healed, and ready to roam: Ndewa's story
When a young elephant was found alone and starving near a village in Zambia, the community stepped in. She was just two years old, with no sign of her mother — likely separated during a dangerous river crossing. They gave her water and kept her safe until help arrived.
IFAW’s partners and elephant rehabilitation experts at Game Rangers International (GRI) responded quickly. She was named Ndewa, meaning beloved, and brought to the GRI elephant nursery, where she found safety, care, and a new herd of fellow orphaned calves.
Now, after two years of healing, Ndewa is ready for the next step — a 14-hour journey to Kafue National Park. There, she’ll join an older orphan herd at GRI’s pre-release facility, continuing her rewilding journey and relearning how to live wild together.
This is rescue.
This is rewilding.
This is our mission.
