Rescuing Chikumbi: an orphaned elephant's journey
In the Rufunsa region of Zambia, a tiny elephant calf was spotted trailing a large herd. No one responded to her cries. Weak and dehydrated, she had likely gone days without her mother’s milk.
Eventually, she was left behind near Chikumbi Village — where local community members stepped in to help. They contacted IFAW’s partners at Game Rangers International (GRI), who responded quickly to rescue and stabilise her. She was named Chikumbi, a name filled with hope.
At the elephant nursery, Chikumbi began her journey of healing. With round-the-clock care, she grew stronger, more confident, and no longer alone. Now, she’s taken the next step — moving to GRI’s pre-release facility to prepare for life back in the wild.
Chikumbi’s future is still unfolding. But thanks to compassion from a village, from rangers, and from supporters like you, she has a second chance at life.
