Chemical exposure begins before a person is ever born. Our regulatory system still targets these substances one at a time, and current policies rarely account for the health threats that emerge when two or more chemicals combine inside us. This week, Ken talks about chemical mixtures with Dr. Jabeen Taiba, a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Nebraska's Water, Climate and Health program. Her recent study, Exploring the Joint Association Between Agrichemical Mixtures and Pediatric Cancer, found a statistically significant positive association between 32 agrichemicals, all pesticides and overall pediatric cancer, with the association slightly stronger among brain and central nervous system cancers. In this part of the conversation, she and Ken turn to what happens when chemicals mix and who it affects most: children. EWG has studied chemical mixtures since the early 2000s, even as chemical companies still test substances one at a time in their purest form.
