Paraquat: A timeline of what we’ve known for years
What happens when decades of scientific evidence don’t lead to action?
This is the paraquat timeline – how research, regulation and delay have played out over more than 40 years.
Since the 1980s, studies have raised concerns about paraquat’s link to Parkinson’s disease. Over time, the evidence has grown stronger – including findings from federally funded research and even industry-backed studies.
Meanwhile, 70+ countries have banned paraquat due to its health risks. The U.S. has not.
The timeline shows a clear pattern: evidence builds, reviews continue and action stalls.
So the question isn’t whether concerns exist – it’s why action hasn’t followed.
