A child’s fight against cholera in Haiti following storm Melissa | UNICEF Haiti

Kenson is only seven years old. After losing his mother to cholera, he fell ill himself and was transported to a health center in Haiti’s South-East. Today, Kenson is receiving the care he needs and is on the path to recovery. Ahead of Storm Melissa, UNICEF took anticipatory action to prevent a worsening of the cholera situation. 600 hygiene kits were prepositioned in the South East department to help families protect themselves before access became even more difficult. After the storm, as flooding and water contamination increased the risk of cholera, UNICEF intensified its response. Hundreds of community health workers received rapid training on cholera response, and 81 sanitary cordons were established in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health and Population (#MSPP), reaching 1,788 households with prevention, decontamination and life-saving information. Through water, sanitation and hygiene interventions, health support and community engagement, #unicef continues working in hard-to-reach areas to stop the spread of cholera and protect children like Kenson. #haiti #foreverychild
