Pakistan's Wetlands - A Documentary by Accountability Lab Pakistan
Pakistan’s wetlands constitute nearly 9.7% of the country’s total land area and are among its most important ecosystems supporting biodiversity, regulating climate impacts, and sustaining local communities. Pakistan is home to 225 significant wetlands and water reservoirs, of which 19 have been recognized internationally as Ramsar Sites for their ecological importance. Yet these fragile landscapes are increasingly threatened by climate change, water scarcity, pollution, and environmental degradation.
This short documentary explores the significance of Pakistan’s wetlands, the risks they face, and why protecting them has become more urgent than ever. It also highlights a field engagement organized by Accountability Lab Pakistan in collaboration with the Green Media Initiative at Haleji Lake, a man-made lake and internationally recognized Ramsar wetland, bringing together young journalists, particularly women reporters, to strengthen youth voices in climate journalism. Through on-ground observation, community interaction, and evidence-based reporting, the initiative encouraged emerging journalists to connect national climate conversations with local realities and amplify stories from communities on the frontlines of environmental change.
The initiative also extended the conversation to Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology where a seminar brought together students, experts, and communities to discuss the growing threats facing Pakistan’s wetlands and heritage sites, while emphasizing the importance of youth engagement, collective action, and sustainable conservation.
