During his first address to an international audience at the Our Ocean Conference in Panama, the new Prime Minister of Fiji Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka delivered a keynote speech at a #BlueProsperity event and established his administration’s dedication to ocean protection for the wellbeing of the people of Fiji. “We talk about economy, we talk about the environment, but for us it is survival.” In line with the theme of this conference, Our Ocean, Our Connection, the Fiji Government reestablished its partnership with the Waitt Institute in February 2023. Blue Prosperity Fiji (BPF) is a 5+ year program led by the Fijian Government to implement 100% sustainable ocean management and 30% full protection of Fiji’s waters. This initiative will build a brighter future for the people of Fiji through sustainable fisheries practices, Blue Economy development, Marine Spatial Planning, and marine protection. It is designed to support inclusion, equity, and traditional knowledge to improve long-term economic stability, livelihoods, and ocean ecosystems.
