Pakistan: how the NPGP is lifting people out of poverty
In Pakistan, 30% of the total population is poor, and an additional 20 million people have been declared vulnerable. 61% of the population live in rural areas and 44% work in the agriculture sector.
As a long-time partner, IFAD has worked closely with the Government of Pakistan to improve the livelihoods of millions of rural households and has financed 30 rural development projects across the country for an overall value of US$3.36 billion.
The Pakistan portfolio is one of IFAD’s largest. It includes over US$1 billion of IFAD’s direct investment, and five currently ongoing projects totalling US$552 million.
One of them is the National Poverty Graduation Programme (NPGP) whose aim is to assist the ultra-poor and very poor in graduating out of poverty on a sustainable basis.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is the only international financial institution exclusively focused on transforming rural economies. IFAD invests in rural people and their communities, building food security, shared prosperity and stability. Today, IFAD and its partners have nearly US$23 billion invested in ongoing projects that are transforming rural economies.
