Tonga after the tsunami: how IFAD supports communities to rebuild their livelihoods
After a devastating volcanic eruption and tsunami in 2022 forced thousands, including Siotame, to leave their homes, communities on the main island of Tongatapu have struggled with limited land and resources.
With support from IFAD, the Tongan government, and partners such as the Australian government , affected families are finding new ways to restore food production and livelihoods—through innovations like biodigesters that revive soil, community gardens led by women, and stronger links to private markets.
