Challenging Illiberal Power: Democratic Campaigns in Central and Eastern Europe

Central and Eastern Europe is often portrayed as a region defined by democratic backsliding and the dominance of authoritarian‑populist forces. While this narrative captures important realities, it is incomplete. In this webinar, experts and practitioners examine how liberal‑progressive parties and movements across the region have successfully mobilized voters, expanded their support base, and defended democratic norms—even in constrained political and media environments. Drawing on concrete campaign examples and comparative analysis, the discussion moves beyond diagnoses of democratic decline to focus on strategies that have worked. Panelists explore how democratic actors can shape narratives, build broad coalitions, and respond to structural disadvantages, whether operating in opposition or in government. The conversation also highlights lessons for policymakers, donors, and democratic stakeholders seeking to support democratic resilience in Central and Eastern Europe.
