Hunger Hotspots 2025: WFP Myanmar Country Director, Michael Dunford

Myanmar is one of the countries of high concern in the latest Hunger Hotspots 2025 report; a joint early warnings report on acute food insecurity produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP). WFP Myanmar Country Director, Michael Dunford, details that over 11.8 million people are acutely food insecure, and children are the most vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition. The Hunger Hotspots report warns that acute food insecurity could deepen across 16 countries and territories over the outlook period of November 2025 to May 2026, compared to the same time one year earlier. Over 11.8 million people acutely food insecure, over 22% of the population. And this is caused by ongoing conflict, economic collapse, natural disasters including a devastating earthquake in March this year. It’s the children that feel the hunger the most, over 400,000 who are malnourished. The World Food Programme is here on the ground. Every day we do what we can to meet the needs. In 2026, we estimate $100 million dollars will be required for us to be able to do what is required to meet the needs of the population. But we need your support to help us stand with the people of Myanmar."
