QHAWAY | Caring in Territories Affected by Toxic Metal Contamination
To shed light on the daily lives of women living in territories affected by toxic metals, Oxfam presents QHAWAY, a story that closely follows Graciela and shows how health impacts affect her life and that of her family in an environment marked by heavy metal contamination.
Chronic illnesses associated with heavy metal contamination generate total or partial dependency, significantly increasing the care needs of affected individuals and directly impacting those who care for them—most of whom are women.
Thus, having a fully dependent person at home increases women’s unpaid care work by 11 hours per week. In rural areas, this translates into an average burden of 55.6 hours per week, far exceeding a standard 8-hour workday.
