IF25: Insuring Low Income Agricultural Households for Climate Change
In the context of climate change, issues of food security for farmers have taken on added urgency. Small farmers feed close to 80% of the total population in Asia and SSA, support the livelihoods of nearly 2B. Integrating smallholder farmers into large supply chains would seem an opportune move. More than 50% of economically active adults in developing countries are farmers, increasingly they are impacted by climate shocks. The session brings to the table a debate on how to ‘create’ a suitable supply of products, and a real market demand for agri insurance mainly as one of the tools for climate change adaptation. This includes many insurance options that mitigate household risks of income fluctuation, as well as business related agri insurance. The discussion will focus on the insurance local ecosystem including FSPs, insurance companies and of course the end clients.
