Steelmakers unready for climate challenge

Companies reliant on fossil fuels have had ten years since the Paris Climate Agreement was signed to make decarbonisation plans and start rolling out new technologies, but are steelmakers doing their part? No. Most are way off track. That’s the central finding of the new SteelWatch Corporate Scorecard. We analysed 18 steelmakers with operations in 29 countries, and none of them are living up to their decarbonisation responsibilities. Not a single steelmaker scored even 50 out of 100. All still run coal-based blast furnaces, and most are continuing to invest in them. Explore company scores in detail at: www.steelwatch.org/scorecard The SteelWatch Corporate Scorecard assesses SSAB, thyssenkrupp, ArcelorMittal, Ternium, JSW, Cleaveland-Cliffs, NLMK, U. S. Steel, Gerdau, Tata Steel, Baosteel, JFE, MMK, Oyak, POSCO, Hyundai Steel, Nippon Steel, and HBIS. It is based on published data, mainly company data in annual reports published in FY 2025 which carries company data from FY 2024.
