Important steps for becoming an EU member: EU-Moldova Summit

The EU-Moldova Summit took place at the European Council on 22nd June 2026. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took part in a press conference with Council President António Costa and Moldovan President Maia Sandu. In her press statement, President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted that Moldova has taken a major step towards the EU by opening its first negotiation cluster. This is a clear recognition of its reforms, resilience and commitment in the face of strong external pressure and hybrid attacks from Russia. Progress is already visible: closer integration through SEPA, roaming, the European Environment Agency and the Growth Plan is bringing real benefits for people, businesses, infrastructure, healthcare and the energy transition. The EU will continue to stand with Moldova by investing in its youth, security and resilience — from DiscoverEU and Erasmus+ to stronger support against hybrid threats, defence and border security.
