European Council Press Conference: Ukraine, the Middle East, and the global economy

The European Council took place in Brussels on 18th and 19th June. European heads of states came together to discuss the following topics: Competitiveness, the EU's long-term budget for 2028 to 2034, Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, migration and illicit drugs. In the press conference on 19th June, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the four main outcomes of the European Council: - On Ukraine: The opening of the first accession cluster, the extension of sanctions on Russia for 12 months, and work on further sanctions. - On the Middle East: Support for the US-Iran interim agreement, concern over Lebanon, and plans to strengthen alternative trade routes and Gulf partnerships. - On the global economy: A firmer EU stance on China’s structural overcapacities, with renewed emphasis on diversification, de-risking and defending the European market from unfair practices. - On the EU budget: Member States agreed on a new Multiannual Financial Framework architecture.
