From Al Majdal to Gaza: A Multi-Generational Story of Displacement

In the summer of 1948, my grandfather left a chicken in the oven as he fled Al Majdal. He believed he would return in a few days. He never saw his home again. Hani Almadhoun, Vice President of Philanthropy at UNRWA USA, shares his family’s story of displacement across generations, from Al Majdal to Bait Lahia in northern Gaza, where his parents were once again forced to flee their home, leaving behind belongings with the hope of return. Full video is out Friday, May 22. For his family, like many others, the Nakba is not a single moment in history, it is an ongoing reality of loss, forced displacement, and separation from home and loved ones. Through it all, UNRWA has been there, providing education, shelter, healthcare, and dignity to families rebuilding their lives. UNRWA is still in Gaza and never left.
