UNRWA USA Condemns Israel’s Demolition of UNRWA Headquarters in East Jerusalem @BreakThroughNews
“This is an attempt, among many attempts, to limit the humanitarian aid that goes to Palestinians in Gaza.”
UNRWA USA Executive Director Mara Kronenfeld spoke with @BreakThroughNews following the January 12 storming and demolition of UNRWA’s headquarters in East Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank by Israeli forces. After demolishing the UNRWA headquarters, Israeli forces violently set what remained of the building on fire, in further defiance of international law.
The demolition marks a dangerous escalation in an ongoing pattern of Israeli attempts to dismantle UNRWA, threatening the dignity and safety of the nearly six million Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA—not only in the occupied West Bank but from Gaza to Syria, from Jordan to Lebanon, and beyond. UNRWA is being attacked precisely because it keeps alive two essential truths: the very existence of Palestine refugees and alongside it, the promise of a future Palestinian state.
As Mara explains in this interview, this is a dark day for international law and much bigger than UNRWA. This is a UN Member State invalidating a United Nations facility. What happens to UNRWA now sets a dangerous precedent for any humanitarian agency or diplomatic mission anywhere in the world.
UNRWA USA calls on the U.S. government to:
🔹 Publicly condemn the demolition of UN premises
🔹 Demand the immediate restoration of the UNRWA headquarters
🔹 Uphold international law and protections for humanitarian agencies
🔹 Restore U.S. government funding to UNRWA’s life-saving work
