🗣️ "The idea started when I was in solitary confinement ... I started to plan this strategy. How should I be stronger than my torturer? How should I fight back, so that such wrong acts are not repeated with the next generation." Jawad Fairooz is a Bahraini #HumanRights defender and former Member of the Bahraini Council of Representatives, who now lives in exile after years of persecution by the authorities, including detention, #torture, and the revocation of his nationality. Addressing a packed room during the launch of the Survivors' Charter during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council Jawad traces the arc of his journey from imprisonment through to a determination to speak out against torture, and the many ways he now influences the international human rights system. His best advice to fellow survivors: "Plan strategically. Find out you are not alone ... face the challenge and engage with the international community, looking for solutions, not revenge."
