CARE’s Role in Advancing Vector-Borne Disease Surveillance and Control
At the heart of innovative research on vector-borne diseases, the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD), led by Dr. Amadou Sall, is making significant strides in understanding and combating diseases such as malaria and arboviruses. Inside IPD’s cutting-edge laboratories, scientists meticulously study vectors like mosquitoes and ticks, bridging the gap from field observations to microscopic analysis. This research forms the foundation for impactful strategies to prevent and control these diseases, which pose growing threats in a changing climate.
However, the true power of this work lies in how it is shared and applied — through CARE, an initiative dedicated to transforming scientific insights into actionable health solutions.
Innovation and Knowledge Sharing Through CARE
CARE plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the groundbreaking research conducted at IPD reaches far beyond the lab. The initiative facilitates trainings and collaborations that disseminate knowledge to over 70 global partners, including top research institutions, multilateral agencies, local innovators, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and regional bodies. A key focus of these efforts has been on Surveillance and Control of Vector-Borne Diseases Related to Climate Change in the West Africa Region. Through specialized courses, CARE equips participants with the latest scientific findings and practical strategies to address these diseases, which are increasingly influenced by shifting environmental conditions.
These trainings are not just theoretical — they are hands-on, collaborative efforts designed to build collective capacity. For instance, participants learn advanced techniques for monitoring vector populations, analyzing climate-related disease patterns, and developing targeted control measures. By fostering a network of informed stakeholders, CARE ensures that the science of vector-borne disease research translates into real-world impact, empowering regions like West Africa to respond effectively to emerging health challenges.
