Vijayawada’s upgraded sewage and biogas plants driving circularity
Vijayawada is taking bold steps toward sustainable urban infrastructure through the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SC-IAP)—funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and jointly implemented by UNIDO and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
The city has:
Upgraded the 20 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Ramalingeswar Nagar, meeting higher effluent standards and improving water quality.
Repaired 4 biogas plants (two at Ajith Singh Nagar, one at Jakkampudi, and one at Ramalingeswar Nagar), enabling the processing of sewage sludge into renewable energy.
Key impacts include:
Cleaner effluent discharge in line with National Green Tribunal standards
Renewable energy generation from biogas, lowering fossil fuel use
Improved circularity by reusing waste streams instead of disposing to landfills or waterways
Strengthened resilience of Vijayawada’s water and waste systems
By integrating wastewater treatment and biogas recovery, Vijayawada is moving closer to low-carbon, circular urban infrastructure, a replicable model for cities across India.
