EU and UNICRI Gather Global Network at the UN Campus in Turin to Counter CBRN Threats
More than 250 participants from over 70 countries gathered at the United Nations Campus in Turin for the third edition of the European Union Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE) Academy.
Funded by the European Union and jointly organized by the European Commission and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the Academy is one of the flagship events of the EU CBRN CoE Initiative, the European Union’s largest civilian external security programme.
Bringing together representatives from partner countries of the Initiative, as well as EU institutions, international organizations, donor governments, regional organizations, technical experts and industry representatives, the Academy provided a platform to strengthen cooperation, exchange experiences, identify common priorities and advance practical solutions to evolving chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks.
The programme combined high-level dialogue, technical exchanges, innovative technologies and demonstrations of operational capabilities, including rescEU CBRN assets funded by the European Union.
For more than sixteen years, the EU CBRN CoE Initiative has supported partner countries across Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, the Gulf and Southeast Asia in strengthening their ability to prevent, detect and respond to CBRN risks through training, technical assistance, institutional development, specialised equipment and international cooperation.
As technological change, geopolitical instability and transnational threats continue to reshape the global risk landscape, initiatives such as the EU CBRN CoE Academy demonstrate the value of international cooperation, national ownership and sustained partnerships in strengthening prevention, preparedness and response.
