Nazhat Shameem Khan, ICC Deputy Prosecutor on Justice, Accountability and the ICC’s Global Mandate
Amid growing global challenges, justice and accountability remain essential to a rules-based international order. In this video, Nazhat Shameem Khan, Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, reflects on the work of the Office of the Prosecutor and its global mandate.
The Court prosecutes individuals for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression, with investigations spanning multiple regions and initiated through Court authorisations, State referrals, and United Nations Security Council resolutions. This work requires sustained coordination between field operations and headquarters, supported by significant resources.
Guided by the principle of non-selectivity and grounded in robust policy frameworks, the Office addresses a wide range of crimes, including gender-based violence, crimes against children, environmental crimes in conflict, and cybercrime. Ongoing situations include Afghanistan, Bangladesh/Myanmar, several African contexts, Ukraine, and Palestine, where dedicated teams continue to pursue accountability.
Her reflections highlight the importance of consistency and legal rigour in strengthening international justice. Despite increasing challenges to international cooperation, the Court remains central to delivering justice for victims, ensuring accountability, and deterring the gravest crimes.
