Nazhat Shameem Khan, ICC Deputy Prosecutor on Accountability in Times of Conflict: Sudan

As violence continues in Sudan, impunity remains a powerful driver of conflict. Accountability is essential to break this cycle and uphold justice. In this video, we speak with Nazhat Shameem Khan, Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), who reflects on the key accountability challenges arising from the current situation in Sudan, including the complexities of investigations and cooperation in contexts of ongoing conflict. The discussion explores why accountability is indispensable to prevent the recurrence of violence, the role of international criminal justice in situations of active conflict, and the investigative and cooperation challenges specific to the Sudan context. The conversation took place in the framework of the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Transnational Crime and Justice (2025–2026), held at the UN Campus in Turin (Italy).
