The Hidden Trade Barrier Slowing India’s Growth | CSEP Explains
India wants to strengthen its manufacturing and global trade position but tariffs and non-tariff barriers are a major constraint.
In this explainer from a CSEP–IDE JETRO working paper, Prerna Prabhakar breaks down a key finding:
• 92.5% of product lines face non-zero import tariffs
• Around $242 billion worth of imports fall in the 10–15% tariff range
• Many of these are critical intermediate and capital goods
• Additional barriers include anti-dumping duties and quality control orders
The takeaway:
India needs a more strategic trade policy, one that builds domestic capacity while keeping supply chains competitive.
