1 - Advancing Regional Resilience and Integration at the World Bank–IMF Spring Meetings
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Executive Secretary led a delegation to the 2026 Spring Meetings, advancing regional integration and cross-border infrastructure as drivers of trade and resilience.
On the margins, he met World Bank Vice President Mr Ndiamé Diop and Regional Director Mr Nathan Belete to strengthen coordination and maximise impact. IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to resilience and livelihoods across the region.

At the Horn of Africa Initiative, H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu stressed that borderlands must be central to development, with corridor investments benefiting communities and livelihoods.

3 - Strengthening Partnerships for Resilience
The Executive Secretary met partners including the Adaptation Fund and Action Against Hunger to advance coordinated responses to food insecurity and climate shocks.
15 April 2026, Puntland, Somalia:
Support to Livestock Export Quarantine Facility
The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), in collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia, assessed the Puntland livestock quarantine facility against regional and international Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards.
The mission provided guidance on certification and operations, and identified gaps for full operationalisation. The facility, with a capacity of 150,000 animals, is expected to serve Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Asian markets.
Supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) through the Regional Livestock Programme (RLP).

Progress on the Transhumance Protocol
The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), through the Pastoralism and Livestock Adaptation to Climate Change in Eastern Africa (PLACE) Programme, convened experts to advance a roadmap for signing and ratifying the IGAD Transhumance Protocol.
17 April 2026, Antalya, Türkiye:
1 - Advancing Dialogue on Sudan and South Sudan
The IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary participated in the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, engaging Sudan’s Foreign Minister and European Union (EU) partners on revitalising dialogue and addressing the ongoing crisis.
He called for stronger coordination of peace initiatives to accelerate progress.

2 - High-Level Panel on Mediation
He also joined a panel on mediation in the Horn of Africa, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts, particularly in Sudan.

Commitment to Peace in Sudan
IGAD participated in the Berlin Conference on Sudan, calling for urgent action on peace, humanitarian response, and a sustainable political solution.
20 April 2026, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia:
Support to the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM)
IGAD’s Special Envoy met leadership of CTSAMVM to review the political and security situation in South Sudan and strengthen collaboration. IGAD reaffirmed its commitment through ongoing trilateral efforts.

Migration and Displacement Data Workshop
IGAD, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics of Somalia (NBS), convened a Technical Working Group on Migration and Displacement Statistics.
The workshop supports data harmonisation and builds on findings from the second Migration and Displacement Statistics Report.

Climate Resilience and Recovery Efforts
IGAD convened a regional consultation under the Recover-Horn Initiative to strengthen climate resilience and food security. Participants reviewed priorities and next steps for implementation.

Women’s Land Rights and Peacebuilding Project
IGAD, in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), launched the Building Women’s Economic Resilience for Sustainable Peace (BWERSP) project in Somalia and South Sudan.
The initiative supports women’s land rights, livelihoods, and participation in peacebuilding.

Advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda
IGAD received a regional delegation of women leaders from faith-based and civil society organisations presenting a Call to Action on Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women’s leadership and participation in peace and security across the region.
