The Week at IGAD: A review of events at IGAD on March 29 to April 4

This week, IGAD advanced regional efforts in peace, resilience, and development across the Horn of Africa. On 29 March, in Djibouti, IGAD called for dialogue and restraint in Somalia, reaffirming its commitment to supporting peace and stability. On 31 March, in Namanga along the Kenya–Tanzania border, the IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development, ICPALD, convened a cross-border One Health workshop to strengthen coordination on zoonotic risks. The same day, in Nairobi, Kenya, the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre, ICPAC, validated a new Impact-Based Forecasting tool to support maize and bean production. Also on 31 March, in Nairobi, ICPAC, in partnership with the Frankfurt School, launched a feasibility study for a regional Climate and Disaster Risk Financing Facility to better protect vulnerable communities. On 1 April, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ICPALD advanced policy dialogue on the ratification of the IGAD Transhumance Protocol to support pastoral livelihoods and reduce cross-border conflicts. That same day, in Addis Ababa, IGAD convened a regional workshop endorsing standard procedures to strengthen the cross-border protection of children on the move. Also on 1 April, in Nairobi, IGAD called for urgent, coordinated action to address child wasting affecting 4.8 million children across the region. On 2 April, in Addis Ababa, the IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan held consultations with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to advance the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement. On 2 April, in Djibouti, IGAD and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies aligned priorities to strengthen food and water security along the Ethiopia–Djibouti corridor. On 2 April, in Mogadishu, Somalia, IGAD supported efforts to promote social cohesion, bringing together communities, refugees, and displaced populations through dialogue and shared activities. And on 4 April, the IGAD Youth Envoy participated in an expert meeting validating a regional report on youth policy performance in the Horn of Africa. IGAD remains committed to advancing coordinated, practical solutions for a peaceful, resilient, and integrated region.
