10 May 2026, Tog Wajale, Ethiopia:
Launching Community Development Initiatives under the Regional Migration Fund
Activities under the Regional Migration Fund (RMF) officially commenced in the Tog-Wajale cross-border area with initiatives aimed at strengthening livelihoods and social cohesion. The approved interventions include upgrading the livestock market centre, constructing a Community Development Centre, and establishing a vegetable market to support migrants, refugees, and host communities. Representing the IGAD Executive Secretary, Ambassador Moussa Meigague reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable cross-border development.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation on Groundwater Management
IGAD convened a three-day regional workshop in Nairobi bringing together Member States and partners to strengthen cooperation on climate-resilient groundwater management across the Horn of Africa. Discussions focused on data sharing, coordinated action, and practical solutions to support water security, livelihoods, and regional resilience.

IGAD Advances Regional Migration Priorities at IMRF 2026
IGAD participated in the Second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, advocating for stronger regional cooperation, migrant protection, and route-based implementation of the Global Compact for Migration. IGAD also joined partners in promoting reliable migration data for evidence-based policymaking and engaged with RefugePoint on advancing refugees’ economic inclusion and self-reliance.
11 May 2026, Kampala, Uganda:
IGAD Participates in Uganda’s Presidential Inauguration Ceremony
IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr Workneh Gebeyehu travelled to Kampala to attend the inauguration ceremony of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, reaffirming IGAD’s commitment to regional solidarity and cooperation. During the visit, the Executive Secretary also attended a State House Dinner ahead of the inauguration ceremony.
11 May 2026, Nairobi, Kenya:
IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary Participates in High-Level Regional Engagements
Representing the Executive Secretary, IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary H.E. Mohamed Abdi Ware participated in a High-Level Ministerial Meeting on United Nations Security Council Reform during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi. He also attended the launch of the Medical Access and Manufacturing Initiative (AIM2030), which focused on strengthening Africa’s medical manufacturing capacity and health resilience.
11 May 2026, Garissa, Kenya:
Advancing Women’s Leadership in Refugee Governance
The IGAD Gender Office launched a three-day capacity-building workshop in Dadaab, Garissa County, bringing together refugee and host community leaders to strengthen women’s leadership in refugee governance. The workshop focuses on inclusive leadership, women’s participation in decision-making, and advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, with support from the Governments of Japan and Sweden.
12 May 2026, Asayita, Ethiopia:
Strengthening Cross-Border Governance and Pastoral Coordination
The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) convened a regional meeting in Asayita, Afar Region, to strengthen governance and coordination of pastoralism and transhumance in border areas. The engagement focused on establishing gender-inclusive coordination committees, enhancing understanding of the IGAD Transhumance Protocol, and promoting peaceful pastoral mobility and regional collaboration.
12 May 2026, Djibouti, Djibouti:
Strengthening Regional Humanitarian Coordination
The IGAD Health and Social Development Division hosted a delegation from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) at the IGAD Headquarters in Djibouti. Discussions focused on strengthening regional humanitarian coordination, disaster preparedness, displacement response, and the “One IGAD” approach to humanitarian action.
12 May 2026, Moyale, Ethiopia/Kenya:
Enhancing Cross-Border Animal Health Cooperation
Ethiopia and Kenya operationalised their bilateral cross-border cooperation agreement on animal health and sanitary measures through a regional engagement in Moyale. The initiative focuses on harmonised surveillance, synchronized vaccination, outbreak response, livestock mobility, and safer cross-border livestock trade to strengthen the prevention and control of transboundary animal diseases.
