Talk To Me Direct Bonus Episode: Judy Kibinge
“A story well told can change our personal relationships with a social issue.”
In this episode, host Natasha Kimani talks with Judy Kibinge, a Kenyan filmmaker, writer, and founder of Docubox, about how storytelling can support democracy in Africa.
They explore the history of Kenyan filmmaking, highlighting the industry's significant progress in inclusion and technology. The conversation also covers the democratisation of storytelling and African filmmakers' passion for addressing social justice issues through their work.
Judy was the first non-expatriate creative director of the multinational advertising agency, McCann (formerly McCann Erikson). After she left advertising to establish her own film production house, she founded Docubox, a company that supports African filmmakers with funding, mentorship and training. Docubox has built a thriving, supportive community of African non-fiction filmmakers. Among the films Docubox supported is Softie, a documentary film about Kenyan social justice activist, Boniface Mwangi, directed by Sam Soko.
Judy has made many films, the most notable of which are Dangerous Affair (2002), Project Daddy (2004) and Something Necessary (2013).
