How do people actually experience mental health—and what can Reddit reveal that clinical systems miss? In this video, Bojan Evkoski, a PhD researcher at Central European University (CEU), explains how large-scale social media data is transforming our understanding of mental health. Using data from online peer support communities, this research explores how individuals seek help across multiple mental health conditions—and what that reveals about the structure of psychopathology. Key insights from the study: -Mental health conditions rarely exist in isolation -Strong connections appear across traditional diagnostic categories -Online communities reveal patterns often missing from clinical data -Conditions like PTSD, depersonalization, and avoidant personality play a central role in mental health networks -Mental health is deeply interconnected, supporting the need for holistic and transdiagnostic approaches These findings challenge traditional systems like the ICD and highlight how platforms like Reddit—and even AI tools—are shaping how people understand and seek support for mental health.
