Kaveh Mazaheri | Artist Protection Fund Fellow-in-Residence, IAS CEU (2026)
Iranian-French filmmaker Kaveh Mazaheri, this year’s Artist Protection Fund Fellow in Residence at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Central European University, presents Rear Shadow—a powerful hybrid film project blending documentary and fiction. Through four interconnected stories stretching from Tehran to France, the film explores trauma, loss, and the fragile border between memory and reality, revealing how grief echoes across lives, places, and time.
Kaveh Mazaheri is known for his distinctive narrative style that blurs the line between realism and psychological exploration. His work often focuses on the silent struggles of individuals within restrictive environments, combining visual restraint with profound emotional depth. He directed several acclaimed short films and documentaries, including Retouch, which received numerous prestigious awards, among them five Academy Award-qualifying prizes from the Tribeca, Krakow, Stockholm, Tirana, and Palm Springs Film Festivals. His first feature film, Botox (2020) won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Torino Film Festival, and Best First Feature Film at both the Fajr International Film Festival and the Tirana International Film Festival.
