Rebuilding the Rule of Law
Numerous EU Member States have been experiencing rule of law backsliding in recent years. While the illiberal playbook has been analysed in academic research, it is still unclear what the rules are for reinstating the fundamentals of the rule of law. This panel brings together leading experts to examine what is the role of the EU law and EU institutions in rebuilding rule of law principles, such as judicial independence and separation of powers. What are the lessons learnt from the attempts to rebuild the rule of law in Poland? What could be a plan to rebuild the rule of law in Hungary?
Speakers:
Petra Bard - Professor for Sustainable Rule of Law at Radboud University Nijmegen, Research Centre for State and Law, Associate Professor at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Department of Criminology, and a Research Affiliate at the CEU Democracy Institute
Christophe Hillion - Professor of European law at the University of Oslo and research professor at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI)
Marta Pardavi - Co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, a leading human rights NGO based in Budapest, Hungary. She has recently been focusing on the threats to the rule of law and civil society space in Hungary and the EU
Chair:
Barbara Grabowska-Moroz - Director of the Rule of Law Clinic at CEU Democracy Institute (CEU DI)
