POTENCIAR: Humanising the maternal health sector for women and children in Mozambique

With funding from UK Aid from the UK government, the POTENCIAR programme strengthens accountability and governance to advance the delivery of basic services in Mozambique. In its three years of implementation, POTENCIAR has helped to humanise the maternal health sector in the areas where it has been working in Nampula province in Northern Mozambique. The programme has made maternal health services more responsive to the needs of women and other marginalised groups and heightened awareness among healthcare providers, such as Health Unit Directors, of their professional responsibilities and codes of conduct at the point of care. POTENCIAR has led the Nampula provincial government to enhance collaboration with civil society and NGOs to improve resources in maternal and child health. Another significant achievement is the strengthening of Grievance Redress Mechanisms, empowering both healthcare users to voice concerns and providers to improve service delivery in response. Nationally, POTENCIAR is collaborating on a new bill on humanised childbirth, expected to be considered by parliament in 2024. This legislation aims to legally protect women from abuse during vulnerable times such as the prenatal, childbirth, and postpartum stages.
