INTERVIEW: Malaria parasites could develop resistance to drugs

In an interview with TBC during the MSMT2 Annual Project and Dissemination Meeting in Dar es Salaam, Ifakara researchers, Prof. Deus Ishengoma, Prof. Said Aboud, and Dr. Honorat Masanja shared findings from a study on malaria parasites that could develop resistance to the drugs currently used to treat the disease. The study revealed the presence of these parasites in Kagera, Kigoma, and Katavi regions, with signs of spread toward Morogoro. The researchers emphasized the importance of strengthening surveillance of malaria parasites, promoting proper use of antimalarial drugs, and continuing to use scientific research to improve malaria control efforts in Tanzania. They also highlighted that malaria prevalence in Tanzania has dropped from 18% to 8% — a major milestone in the fight against malaria.
