CLIMATE TALK | Celebrating Mangroves: Data, Diplomacy & Local Duty
Around the world, July 26th is commemorated as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, proclaimed in 2015 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Mangrove forest conservation is crucial for global strategies on climate change mitigation.
The ecosystem goods and services provided by mangroves include protection from coastal erosion, firewood and traditional medicines. Mangroves are productive fishing grounds and serve as important nurseries and habitats for a wide range of fish, crabs and other invertebrate species, which are crucial for food security and coastal livelihoods in the Pacific.
To raise awareness and promote mangrove preservation, the German Embassy in Suva together with GIZ and key partners hosted a Climate Talk session for World Mangrove Day 2025 on July 29 2025 at the Novotel Hotel in Lami.
