Our ocean produces over half the air we breathe, regulates the Earth's temperature, and feeds three billion people. But it's in crisis! Kelp forests are vital to our ocean and the marine life that call it home. These beautiful ribbons of algae absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen, helping slow global warming and ocean acidification while supporting thousands of species like sea otters. But over the past 50 years, more than half of global kelp forests have vanished—decimated by climate change, pollution, and ecosystem imbalances. When kelp disappears, so does our ocean’s ability to buffer climate change, leading to a devastating ripple effect.
