Your role
To scale FMOs private equity business, you will work closely with our colleagues at the Partnerships for impact (P4i) department to identify public (funders / donors / philanthropies) and private impact investors who are interested and willing to invest or assist FMO to grow its private equity portfolio, i.e. you will understand the product and needs of the private equity department, have experience in the Private Equity space, understand Equity structures, governance and alignment dynamics, etc.; and armed with that knowledge you will approach potential funders to structure different programs/solutions which ultimately assist FMO in growing its private equity portfolio under management.
As (Senior) Business Development Officer, you will work closely with both PE and P4i teams to help identify opportunities for risk mitigation/sharing for our equity business, through partnerships with public/philanthropic entities and private investors with an investment mandate that align with FMO's investment strategy. You will officially report to one of the members of the PE Management Team but will work closely with the colleagues within PIM and FIM who manage the current public funding programs.
You will be asked to lead on:
- Identify and originate opportunities and design structures for blending public and private funding for FMO's equity investments.
- Exploring (blended) fundraising and capital-mobilization opportunities together with the PE investment teams (not performing investment activities).
- Building strong relationships with public and private impact investors as well as other relevant parties that are active in blended finance and impact investing, by understanding their business, the environment they operate in and their investment strategy and allocations.
- supporting relevant departments within FMO with the implementation and operationalization of new (potentially blended) private equity investment mandates; and
- Staying on top of trends and developments in the field of blended finance and impact investing to identify and seize new funding opportunities.

Your team
The PE department manages and builds FMO's equity portfolio of around EUR 4bn, consisting of direct investments, co-investments and PE fund investments, spread across 6 investment teams (PE Agri Food and Forestry, PE Energy, PE Financial Institutions, PE Global Funds, PE Fund Solutions and PE Ventures).
The P4i Department: is FMO's hub for capital mobilization, blended and concessional finance:
- PIM: manages FMO's public funding portfolio (currently EUR 3bn) and develops new grant and blended finance programs with partners such as the Dutch Government, EC, GCF, UK Government and US DFC;
- FIM: designs and manages commercial investment vehicles that co-invest with FMO.
- Syndications: mobilizes third-party capital by syndicating FMO's loans and investments to other investors, expanding FMO's reach and impact.
Your background
- MSc. degree in finance, economics, political science or public administration.
- At least 8 years working experience in development finance and/or private equity preferably including program design, fund management and/or blended finance.
- Experience and track record in investing and fundraising.
- Experience with relevant public and private funding partners is a plus.
- Strong creative- and leadership skills, problem-solving attitude and proven self-steering capacities.
- International public sector or private equity experience and good understanding of the global development architecture and capital markets.
- Pioneering mindset demonstrating pro-active ownership and flexibility to help shape this new role where not all aspects are 'written in stone' yet.
- Energetic, optimistic and outgoing personality.
- Keen to approach and build new investor/funder relationships.
- Ability to represent the Private Equity product and department at conferences and on panels.
- Effective communication and relationship management skills
- Strong team skills, contributing to team success and to a constructive, positive and collaborative work environment.
- Willingness to travel.
