Mission and objectives:
- The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations Public Health Organization established in 1948. The objective of the World Health Organization shall be the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health.
- World Health Organization achieves its goals by performing its essential functions:
- 1. Take a leadership role in key health issues and create partnerships when joint action is needed;
- 2. Set research priorities and encourage the acquisition, application and dissemination of useful knowledge;
- 3. Setting standards and criteria and encouraging and monitoring them;
- 4. Develop ethical and evidence-based policies
- 5. Provide technical support, be an agent of change and build institutional capacity in a sustainable way;
- 6. Monitor health status and assess health trends.
Context:
- The World Health Organization (WHO) was established in 1948 as the United Nations' specialized agency for health. Its mandate is to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve vulnerable populations. The WHO Regional Office for Africa supports Member States in strengthening health systems, advancing universal health coverage, and improving health outcomes across the African Region. Within the Health Systems and Services Department, the Health Financing and Governance Team provides technical support on health financing reforms, public financial management for health, governance, accountability and financial protection.
- The Health Financing and Governance Team supports Member States through analytical work, technical assistance, evidence generation and policy dialogue. From 2026 onwards, the team will implement an expanded portfolio of multi‑country initiatives supported by development partners, increasing the volume of technical, analytical, and advocacy outputs produced at regional and country levels. These activities heighten the need for clear communication, strong digital presence, and professionally designed products aligned with WHO standards. The Digital Media and Graphic Design Officer UN Volunteer will support these efforts by strengthening digital communication, improving the visual presentation of technical outputs and enhancing the accessibility and visibility of the team's work for internal and external audiences.
Task description:
- Under the overall supervision of the Hiring Manager and in close collaboration with HFG technical staff and the HSS Communications team, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
- Support the development, drafting, editing and proofreading of communication products, including policy briefs, reports, presentations, newsletters and web content.
- Translate complex technical information on health financing and governance into clear, audience‑appropriate communication materials.
- Design and format reports, policy briefs, fact sheets, presentations and other products in compliance with WHO branding and accessibility standards.
- Develop visual content such as infographics, charts, and basic digital assets to support technical and advocacy products.
- Support digital communication activities, including content for websites, intranet pages and social media channels, in coordination with relevant communications teams.
- Support documentation and visibility of meetings, workshops, and regional or country‑level events, as required.
- Liaise with technical staff to collect inputs, ensure quality control and support timely delivery of communication outputs.

Skills and experience:
- Advanced higher degree (Master's or equivalent) in communications, graphic design, journalism, public health, international relations, or a related field.; a first-level university degree or equivalent combined with relevant professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;
- At least 3 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in communications, graphic design, journalism, public health, international relations or other relevant programmes; experience with graphic design is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
- Other desired/mandatory required technical knowledge
- Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
- Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
- Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
- Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
- Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; adobe suite, UI/UX and collaborative design, familiarity with vector alternatives and layout applications; and office technology equipment;
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
- Desirable: valid national driver's license and proven ability to drive manual gear 4x4 over rough terrain; (if not applicable, delete)
