Innovative Protein: How planetary Grows Food from Microbes

Demand for alternative protein is growing rapidly, but scaling production efficiently remains a major challenge. Swiss startup planetary has developed an approach based on mycoprotein – a nutritious, animal-free protein produced from microbes in large-scale bioreactors. By integrating production into existing sugar plants, the company created a “plant-in-plant” model that supports cost reduction, local production and efficient resource use. Planetary SA has used WIPO‘s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) to seek patent protection across multiple markets, supporting its international expansion through technology licensing and direct market entry. In this video, CEO David Brandes and Engineering Director Tanja Buch discuss the company’s scaling journey, production model, and how intellectual property supports business growth. planetary is a winner of the 2025 WIPO Global Awards, which recognize startups and SMEs using intellectual property to create business and social impact.
