How can astronauts measure their weight when they are effectively weightless in space? π€
One of the side effects of a long stay in space is the loss of bone density and muscle mass because astronauts donβt have to work against gravity in the same way they do on Earth. Over time, if no countermeasures are taken, this loss of bone and muscle mass can lead to problems when they return to Earthβs gravity.
Instead of using weighing scales like we do on Earth, astronauts use devices that measure their mass rather than their weight. The device our astronaut Sophie Adenot uses in this video to measure mass is called a Mass Measurement Device (MMD), known in Russian as ΠΠ·ΠΌΠ΅ΡΠΈΡΠ΅Π»Ρ ΠΠ°ΡΡ (ΠΠ).
