Ep. 10 - Seeds of Survival: Farmers, War and Food in Lebanon
In this new episode of afkARI, we sit down with Kanj Hamade and Julia Choucair Vizoso for a conversation on war, agriculture, and food sovereignty in Lebanon.
Together, they unpack the cascading effects of Israeli aggression on Lebanon’s food systems; from the destruction of agricultural livelihoods and supply chains to the deeper structural fragilities exposed by repeated crises and decades of donor-driven agricultural policy.
As with all afkARI conversations, we leave the language and accent of the discussion to the discussants themselves. Although both Kanj and Julia are from South Lebanon, they chose to hold this conversation in English because the environmental dimensions of war, particularly ecocide and the destruction of food systems, remain profoundly under-discussed internationally. Their intention was simple: to make the conversation accessible to as many people as possible.
afkARI is a series of focused, one-on-one conversations that move beyond summaries. Each discussion brings together an ARI author and a relevant expert to interrogate ideas, connect research to lived realities, and open up space for critical reflection on the issues shaping the region.
