Empowering Mozambique. Co-management for sustainable fisheries and livelihoods

https://www.fao.org/in-action/kofap/our-projects/sfc/en Stretching along 2 800 kilometres, Mozambique’s coastline is central to the lives of many fishing communities, providing both food and income. However, increasing pressure from overfishing, environmental change, and limited access to infrastructure and services is undermining this way of life. In response to these challenges, the FAO-led Smart Fisheries Co-management project, funded by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea, promoted collaboration between government, institutions and communities to support sustainable fisheries development and improved co-management systems in Mozambique. The project also responded to community needs by supporting practical livelihood solutions that help reduce pressure on aquatic resources while diversifying sources of income.
