Inspectors in Dakar, Senegal carry out a live vessel inspection under expert supervision, boarding ships to check documents, examine fishing gear and verify catches. This hands-on training, supported by FAO, the GEF-funded Common Oceans Tuna Project and ICCAT, offers a frontline look at how countries are building the skills needed to detect illegal fishing and stop illicit catch from entering the market.
Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing drives overfishing and threatens sustainable fisheries, livelihoods and marine biodiversity. Ten years after its entry into force, FAO’s Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) is supporting countries to strengthen port controls and cooperation - helping to close the net on illegal fishing worldwide.
