Pesticide management in Turkiye

In Türkiye's Isparta region, responsible for a quarter of the nation's apple production, FAO's pesticide management project has successfully introduced Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The project safely disposed of 14 tonnes of unregistered, illegal, or expired pesticides. Through field trials with the Isparta Fruit Research Institute, IPM reduced codling moth pesticide use by 70% while achieving 0% fruit damage. Farmers are notified to place pheromone dispensers. Beneficiary farmers report applying no pesticides after installing dispensers, with no yield loss or pest damage. Local farmers use and install dispensers in their orchards. Regional producers now understand and trust IPM, achieving a 70% reduction in pesticide use. The approach has been so successful that neighbouring regions are promoting similar incentives for their farmers.
