Black soldier flies offer a practical, scalable solution to convert organic waste into valuable inputs for food and agriculture.
Through the BioDAF II project, a scaled-up Black Soldier Fly production system was established in Grand-Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, transforming organic urban waste into nutrient-dense protein feed for livestock and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer. As part of the bioeconomy, this approach recovers value from waste streams and reintegrates it into local production systems.
It strengthens food system resilience, reduces dependence on imported livestock feed and chemical fertilizers, and creates income opportunities for vulnerable communities, especially women and youth.
By turning urban waste into productive resources, black soldier flies support more efficient, local, and sustainable agriculture.
