'Apex' Cape fur seal hot on the heels of a blue shark
In the cold, nutrient-rich waters off South Africa, Cape fur seals and blue sharks are members of the same predatory guild, hunting many of the same prey, from schooling fish to squid and seabirds. Yet the relationship between these two iconic species is more complex than simple competition. Cape fur seals have been recorded actively preying on blue sharks: a behaviour known as ‘asymmetrical intraguild predation’, where competitors become prey. This is a striking glimpse into the shifting and often unexpected dynamics of life in the ocean.
