WorldFish in India: Boosting Small-Scale Aquaculture and Rural Livelihoods

In India, aquatic foods are improving nutrition, strengthening livelihoods and creating new opportunities for communities. WorldFish began root presence in India in 1996 through a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. Since then, fish production in Odisha has nearly doubled, nearly 20,000 women’s self-help groups are engaged in fish farming, and over 10 million mola hatchlings have been distributed to farmers and women’s groups. On the science front, WorldFish enabled the first mass breeding of mola in India and evaluated Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) under conditions in the country. Looking ahead, WorldFish continues to catalyze innovation, foster inclusive policy and empower communities. We are working through strong and strategic partnerships to advance a resilient, equitable and nutritionally secure aquatic food system for India.
