Creating sustainable and resilient artisanal fisheries in Kenya | AABS [Swahili Kenya Sub]
Fish production in Kenya has long been led by inland fisheries, but its lakes and rivers have reached their limits of sustainable capture—this presents a golden opportunity for small-scale coastal producers.
Asia–Africa BlueTech Superhighway (AABS) is supporting Kenya to find solutions to fisheries and aquaculture challenges by leveraging South–South collaboration to improve sustainability, resilience and prosperity in coastal communities.
This video explains three essential areas of work in the country:
🐟 Digital information systems—co-creating and scaling out contextualized digital information systems for small-scale fisheries.
🐟 Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA)—an aquaculture approach that combines different species from various trophic levels in a single system to maximize resource use, reduce waste and mimic natural ecosystems.
🐟 Climate-smart technologies for reducing aquatic food loss and waste—scaling affordable, accessible climate-smart food preservation, processing and storage technologies to reduce aquatic food loss and waste.
