“Climate change isn’t abstract. It shows up in our bodies.” May 2026 - An independent Commission of former heads of government, international bodies, ministers and civil society leaders - convened by WHO Europe – has called on WHO to formally declare climate change a public health emergency of international concern. In total, the Commission issued 17 recommendations for what WHO and countries should do next. “This Call to Action is a powerful warning of the growing climate dangers confronting the region but also a vision that shows the potential of ambitious and timely action to protect and promote health in the face of these threats,” said the Chair of the Commission, the former Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir.
