Make School Kits: Lutheran World Relief Instructional Video
Thank you for supporting God’s little scholars around the world by assembling School Kits! These kits provide children with the essential supplies they need to learn, grow, and build a brighter future — especially in areas affected by poverty, conflict, or natural disasters.
In this video, Martha Piedrasanta and Mary Tereszkiewcz from Lutheran World Relief’s Quilt & Kit Ministry walk you through everything you need to know about assembling School Kits, including what to include, what to avoid, and tips for packing efficiently.
What’s in a School Kit?
- 4 spiral-bound notebooks (70 sheets each, 8x10½ inches, wide- or college-ruled)
- 1 box of crayons (16- or 24-count, high quality and durable)
- 1 pencil sharpener (covered or uncovered)
- 1 30-centimeter ruler (with or without inches)
- 1 pair of blunt scissors (no pointed ends)
- 1 2½” eraser
- 5 unsharpened No. 2 pencils with erasers (secured with a rubber band, no mechanical pencils)
- 5 new black or blue ballpoint pens (secured with a rubber band, no gel pens, without personal contact information if obtained from a business or organization)
- 1 drawstring-style bag (sturdy fabric, like canvas or cotton/poly blend)
About the drawstring Bags:
- All School Kit contents must go into a drawstring-style bag that cinches closed at the top and can be worn like a backpack.
- If you enjoy sewing, we have a simple pattern available on our website.
Prefer to purchase bags? No problem! We’ve compiled a list of bulk options on our website.
- Use sturdy fabric like canvas or a cotton/poly blend for durability. While nylon is acceptable, more durable materials are recommended to withstand daily use.
What NOT to include:
Loose-leaf paper, composition books, glue, glue sticks, mechanical pencils, gel pens, or any additional items NOT on the list.
Helpful Tips
- Stack spiral notebooks in opposite directions to prevent tangling.
- Place rulers inside notebooks to avoid bending.
- Pack kits snugly in boxes (max 40 lbs) to prevent damage during transport.
- Your generosity ensures that children can continue learning, even in the most challenging circumstances. Thank you for making a difference!
